AFTER a distinguished 27-year career with Gloucestershire County Council, Pete Bungard has announced his retirement as chief executive, effective May 4, 2025.

Mr Bungard, who joined the council in 1998 as director of environment, became chief executive on May 5, 2005, a role he will have held for 20 years by the time he steps down.

His decision to retire aligns with the upcoming county council elections, allowing his successor the opportunity to build strong relationships with new and returning councillors from the outset.

During his tenure, Mr Bungard has guided the council through several major challenges, including the aftermath of the Children’s Service Ofsted inspection, the impact of austerity measures, and the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Having worked under three council leaders, Mr Bungard has established key relationships within the council and the wider local government sector. He has also contributed to Local Government Association corporate peer challenges and served as a non-executive director for the Government Equalities Office under the previous Labour Government.

Reflecting on his career, Mr Bungard said: “It has been an absolute privilege to have worked for such a fantastic local authority for almost three decades. One thing has remained consistent: the dedication and hard work of council staff."

Cllr Stephen Davies, leader of the council, expressed gratitude for Mr Bungard's leadership, acknowledging the invaluable contributions he has made to Gloucestershire.
