RESIDENTS of the Forest of Dean now have the chance to serve their community in a vital role, as Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service opens its recruitment.

The service is seeking about 20 new firefighters, offering Forest of Dean residents an opportunity to join a team dedicated to keeping their communities safe.

The recruitment team has highlighted that firefighting often involves skills and values many residents already possess—such as supporting local people, promoting safety, and engaging with community issues. Beyond responding to emergencies, firefighters play an active role in educating the public, conducting school visits, and collaborating with community groups.

Chief fire officer Mark Preece encourages residents to apply: “If you would like to play your part in helping to keep communities in our county safe, and help to save lives, we would love to hear from you.”

While a good standard of fitness and swimming skills are essential, the service is committed to making reasonable adjustments for those with disabilities, aiming to create a workforce reflective of the Forest’s unique community.

Councillor Dave Norman, the Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member responsible for the Fire and Rescue Service, added: “As a former firefighter, I know the pride that comes with serving your community. If you feel you have the right qualities, I encourage you to consider this role.”

The recruitment drive, open until Monday, November 18, includes full training for successful applicants.
