LYDNEY Town’s slight resurgence in form continued on Saturday, September 7, though they fell just short once again, suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to unbeaten second-placed Roman Glass St. George.
Despite the loss, Lydney can take heart from a competitive performance against a high-flying opponent, especially after enduring a series of heavy defeats earlier in the season.
The game began on a tough note for Lydney, as Roman Glass took the lead just seven minutes in. Conor Hartley capitalised on a low cross, slotting the ball past the Lydney defence to put the hosts in front. However, the game took a turn in Lydney’s favour after 20 minutes when former Lydney loanee, goalkeeper Elliott Jones, was shown a red card for the home side.
Lydney seized the opportunity, and their persistence paid off in the 26th minute when striker Lewis Pinchard found the equaliser. Pinchard’s goal brought hope for the visitors, who were looking to build on improved performances in recent weeks.
Just before half-time, however, Roman Glass restored their lead. Leigh Gilchrist struck to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage, and despite their numerical disadvantage, they remained resilient throughout the second half.
Lydney pushed hard for an equaliser, but the hosts defended well, denying the visitors clear chances. Roman Glass even came close to extending their lead in the 75th minute, but on-loan goalkeeper Tom Way produced a fantastic save to keep Lydney in the game.
Despite their efforts, Lydney could not find a way through, and Roman Glass held on to secure all three points. The defeat sees Lydney slip to the bottom of the table, as Cirencester Town picked up their first win of the season to overtake them.
Next up for Lydney is a crucial clash with Thornbury Town on Saturday, 14th September. The game is shaping up to be a must-win, but Lydney can take confidence from their previous encounter with Thornbury, having beaten them 5-1 in the FA Cup in August.
