The golfing exploits at Forest Hills golf club, started on Tuesday last week, as the club was privileged to be invited to host the match between, Gloucestershire Golf Captains, and their counterparts from Bedfordshire, writes Geoff Norris.
The Gloucestershire team with local involvement in the form of Joe Betty from Lydney G.C, managed to win the match 5 - 3. The latest Seniors away match, saw Alan Bridges take his team to Gloucester Golf Club. In the opener, Captain Severn and Mark Graham lost before Geoff Pearson and Bill Peffers took their opponents to the 18th green, before shaking hands, 1 down. Phil Gwynne and Roger Ovett then put a mark on the visitors side of the scoreboard. Next up, it was Bob Gibson and Ray Innes, who they lost just before the overall loss was confirmed, when Barry Klein and Neil James, took their match to the seventeenth green. In the last match, Andy Ward and Kev Greening, also managed to make it to the final green, before shaking hands making the final score Gloucester 4.5 - Forest Hills 1.5.
The Seniors Pairs Better Ball on Thursday, was won by Ken Ellway and Ash Jethwa, Terry Osborne and Robin Leamon were second, and Paul Sologub and Colin White third. For the second competition running, there were no twos registered, and as such, the kitty will be rolled over onto the Yellow Tee Individual Stableford on Thursday The latest B Team match, brought Broadway Golf Club to Mile End, a visit that resulted in an emphatic win for the home team. Whilst the ‘ B Team’ were at home, Dan Maller led his A Team to Broadway, for their latest N.G.F.L. fixture, and they were sent packing on the wrong end of a 5 - 1 defeat, with Shane Moore and Leigh Powell the only winners.
Saturday evening saw the latest 4 Seasons Family Day take place, and although the turnout was lower than expected, due mainly to the weather, and the fact that the England Euro quarter final was on in the upstairs barMens Captain, Alan Edwards won the golf with a one under par score of 37, and Mike ‘Bobble’ Edwards, set the standard on the ‘Chip & Putt’.
Division 1 of the July Medal on Sunday, was won by Josh Goode, Dave Cole was second with Paul ‘Sty’ Williams in third place. Ian Huxstep won Division 2 , winning on countback from Joe Wilcox, with Ashley James third.Daniel Morsewon Division 3, with Kevin Burford, in second place, and Geoff Norris third. Division 1 of the Seniors July Medal, was won by David Gardiner, Pat Simcoe was second from Terry Davies. Graham Wallace won Division 2, with Terry Hook and Ashley Drew both returning nett 77s. Bob Gibson edged the result in Division 3, Geoff Norris was secondand Mike Wallace third. Following last weeks Two’s Kitty roll-over, the brace of claims made by Mark Barnard and Graham Wallace were each worth a pretty penny.
Forest Hills sent a team to Henbury Golf Club in Bristol, to take part in The Gloucestershire Golf Centenary Plate Invitation Day, and the quartet of Mens Captain Alan Edwards, Barry Klein, Mike Steward and Pat Simcoe, carried off the Salver finishing six shots clear of the runners up.
The Seniors entertained their friends from the Forest of Dean Golf Club in the first leg of the 2024 Miners Lamp.Up front, the Captains faced off, and home Captain Alan Bridges and Phil Gwynne beat Dave Donoghue and Brad Jones. Ken Lawrence and Bob Gibson then followed with another ‘W’ for the home team, as they beat Jeff Thomas and Geoff Warren. This was followed by another one sided encounter, as Dave Howard and Neil James shook the hands of Trevor Hallett and Frank Ashurst on the fifteenth green, as they won 5 & 3. Roger Hall and Kev Doyle kept the home flag flying, as they beat Jerry Bolster and Mick Wallace. The winning streak was temporarily stalled in match 5, as Geoff Pearson and Chas Challis lost against Pete Hoare and Graham Davies. This proved to be the only blip on the home teams radar, as up next, Kev Burford and Andy Ward won against Martin Pearce and Keith Marfell.Clive Winward and Geoff Norris then eased to another comfortable win against Bob Penny and Barry Boseley. The final match involving Pete Walters and Ray Innes against Mike Sinclair and Feruccio Marangon, resulted in another win for the home team.
