LYDNEY captain Sam Arnott says his team cut out the mistakes that have cost the Severnsiders dear in their difficult start to the new campaign.
Lydney beat Maidenhead 38-29 at Regentsholme in their fifth South West Premier fixture this season and Arnott said a more consistent performance was key to the hosts picking up a five-try win.
Tai Lakabuka and Dave Bennett touched down twice each, while there was another try for clinical winger Reuben Haile.
Costner Lane also crossed the whitewash and Ollie Locke scored four conversions.
“It’s been a difficult start but to get that win off our back s was a huge relief on Saturday night,” he said.
“We’ve not been blown away in any of our fixtures, it’s just been individual errors in games that have cost us.
“We’ve been gifting teams tries and we really cut that out on Saturday.
“We put in a performance for a long period for the first time. For 70 minutes we were in complete control.
“They scored 21 points in the final stages which flattered them a lot but they were a decent side.”
Maidenhead are coached by England hero and World Cup Winner Will Greenwood twice a week and the former Harlequins and Leicester centre complimented Lydney on Twitter.
“They’re a well drilled side and that’s no surprise when you’re coached by someone like that on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Arnott added.
Lydney travel to fellow strugglers Brixham in another tough away day on Saturday.
“They’ve lost all of their games so far but only by a few points,” Arnott said.
“I don’t expect them to be where they are at the end of the season. It’ll be another tough test but we’ll now go there full of confidence.”
