Lydney Ladies seconds kicked off their West Women’s Berkeley Division One season in style with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Cirencester 2s at The Dean Academy.

The squad featured a mix of familiar faces and promising newcomers. Ella Kidd made her debut in attack, while Lucy Smith, who has honed her skills in the 3rd team, delivered a standout performance.

The match began at a fast pace, with both sides pressing hard and creating chances. Lydney had a few opportunities from open play, but Cirencester’s defence held strong. Penalty corners were awarded to both teams, but the experienced Lydney defensive pairing of Jane Box and Debbie Legge ensured Cirencester couldn’t capitalise.

The first half ended goalless, but Lydney came out with renewed vigour after the break. The home side pushed for a breakthrough, yet Cirencester continued to challenge, denying them clear chances.

As the clock ticked down, the deadlock was finally broken in the final 10 minutes when a precise cross from Ali Bannister found Lucy Smith at the top of the D. Smith coolly fired the ball into the back of the net, securing the decisive goal.

Lucy Smith’s match-winning goal and all-around performance earned her the well-deserved Player of the Match accolade.
