YORKLEY Star Cricket Club celebrated a milestone event with the inaugural Alec Kear Cup, a match that pitted the club’s junior team against its senior squad in a spirited display of local cricketing talent and community spirit.
The day was made even more memorable by the presence of Alec Kear himself, a club legend whose legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Yorkley Star.
Alec Kear’s journey with Yorkley Star began in 1946 when he first donned the club's colors at just 11 years old. The establishment of the Alec Kear Cup serves as a fitting tribute to his remarkable contributions to the club and the sport.
The match showcased a blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned expertise, with both sides demonstrating impressive cricketing skills and sportsmanship.
The day unfolded with the juniors setting a competitive target of 116 runs. The junior team, comprising Ki Stone, Cody Saunders, Luke Hatherall, Liam Hurcombe, Mitch Hale, Lewis Edwards, Harry James, Will James, Aiden Skelton, Dan Edmunds, and Shane O'Sullivan, demonstrated impressive teamwork and skill throughout their innings.
In response, the senior team, featuring Paul Catton, Andy Rowles, Martyn Hale, Charlie James, Tom Rudd, Chris Edmunds, Gareth James, Jay Mullet, Liam Saunders, Steve Chandler, and Kieren James, showcased their experience and strategy to chase down the target, finishing with a total of 130 runs. The senior team’s victory was celebrated with enthusiasm, marking a successful debut for the Alec Kear Trophy.
Alec Kear was on hand to present the trophy to the winning captain, Paul Catton. Catton expressed his gratitude and highlighted the significance of the cup, reflecting on Alec Kear’s enduring impact on the club.
