TWO significant civil engineering projects in the Forest of Dean have been selected as regional finalists in a competition, which now requires public participation to determine the ultimate winner.
The restoration of Lydney Harbour and the Tintern Wireworks Bridge refurbishment project were chosen to feature in the online vote as part of the Institution of Civil Engineers’ South West People's Choice Award 2024.
They will be up against 10 other engineering projects across the South West.
Tintern Wireworks Bridge, known for its appearance in "Sex Education" on Netflix, underwent extensive repairs totalling £2.2 million. Gloucestershire County Council led the project in collaboration with AtkinsRéalis, Volker Laser, and Monmouthshire County Council.
The restoration of Lydney Harbour, a pivotal 200-year-old site, revitalised it into a functional and safe harbor through a £2.1 million initiative.
Jackson Civil Engineering oversaw the project for the Environment Agency, with support from Centregreat Engineering, JD Marine, and KingLifting.
The award recognises outstanding contributions to civil engineering across the region.
South West regional director for ICE, Miranda Housden commented: "The award highlights the transformative role of civil engineering in our communities. I encourage everyone to explore these remarkable projects and cast their vote for the one they believe has made the greatest difference."
The winner will be announced during the Civil Engineering Awards ceremony in Bristol on Thursday, October 24. The event will be hosted by broadcaster Rob Bell and will celebrate excellence and innovation in civil engineering.
