THE SEVERN Bridge parkrun has been ranked as the third-best in the UK, according to a new book by author Lucy Waterlow. Featured in The Ultimate Guide to parkrun, this unique run is celebrated for its stunning views and its extraordinary route. 

Parkrun, a free 5 kilometre event held every Saturday morning in over 2,000 locations across 22 countries, is marking its 20th anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, Ms Waterlow compiled a list of the top 10 UK parkruns, with Severn Bridge standing out for its remarkable setting. 

Beginning in Monmouthshire, the course takes runners onto the iconic Severn Bridge, offering expansive views of the Severn Estuary below. Runners briefly enter England before turning back to finish in Wales, with the route concluding in a brightly painted underpass, a cheerful ending to a rewarding challenge. 

What makes the Severn Bridge parkrun especially unique is that it’s the only parkrun that crosses between two nations. Runners are treated to a flat, fast course alongside the M48 motorway, where passing drivers often show their support by honking their horns. 

With an average weekly attendance of 237 participants and an average finish time of 29:04, the Severn Bridge parkrun caters to runners of all abilities. 

Ms Waterlow acknowledged that narrowing down the top 10 parkruns was no easy task, with so many scenic and special events around the country: "The ones I have chosen are all in beautiful and/or unique locations where you can take in some amazing sights whilst parkrunning,” she explained: “The Severn Bridge parkrun’s combination of spectacular views, flat terrain, and the novelty of crossing borders made it stand out." 

As parkrun celebrates its 20-year milestone on October 2, the Severn Bridge event continues to stand out as one of the most distinctive and scenic runs in the UK, offering participants a chance to experience a truly remarkable location while taking part in a global fitness phenomenon.
