A CHURCH in Lydney is aiming to raising £400,000 to revamp St Mary’s Church.

The first phase of the development includes creating a disabled access and toilets, improved sound and lighting, a bespoke servery, a welcome desk and a bookshop.

This has been estimated to cost around £132,000.

Rev Sarah Fenby said: “With its large spire, St Mary’s, is something of a focal point for the town of Lydney, and with its large capacity is one of the key places where large sections of the community can be gathered at important times.

“But our facilities constrain us significantly, and there is more we would like to do to include all people.

Rev Sarah said: “These are aimed at accommodating the needs encountered within the community so much better. Making the beautiful heritage of St Mary’s to be open throughout the week.”

Nina Summerfield, a fundraiser for the church, said: “Around half the funds have been raised for the first phase and we look forward to the challenge of seeing the second half raised, with thanks to the positive on-going support of our town and community.”
