National Highways has announced forthcoming changes to the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, which will impact drivers starting Sunday, 28 July. The bridge, a vital connection between England and Wales, will undergo essential long-term maintenance, resulting in alterations to traffic patterns and road conditions.
To facilitate the maintenance work, a contraflow system will be introduced. This will reduce traffic to two lanes in each direction and impose a temporary speed limit of 40 mph. The contraflow is expected to be in place until the end of autumn, though the duration may be influenced by weather conditions.
The maintenance work will involve several significant tasks. Initially, the existing surfacing and waterproofing layer will be removed. Following this, the concrete bridge deck will undergo a thorough inspection. Once the inspection is complete, a new waterproofing system will be applied, and the bridge will be resurfaced to enhance its safety and durability.
To help alleviate potential congestion, motorists are advised to use alternative routes, such as the M48 Severn Bridge, whenever possible. The timing of the work has been strategically planned for summer and early autumn to minimise the risk of weather-related disruptions, particularly high winds.
National Highways appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this necessary maintenance period. For the latest updates and additional information, members of the public are encouraged to visit the National Highways website or follow the organisation's social media channels.
