Serious concerns over nuclear plans
On Sunday I was fortunate to be at a Fukushima memorial in Lydney. I didn’t realise that the Fukushima disaster was a catastrophe waiting to happen—built with cost-cutting shortcuts and substandard safety measures, the plant’s inadequate five-meter seawall crumbled against the sheer force of a 17-meter tsunami on March 11, 2011, flooding the facility, knocking out vital cooling systems, and unleashing one of the worst nuclear crises in history.
I was shocked to learn about plans to build four/six new nuclear reactors at Oldbury, directly across the water from us. Given the unresolved issue of the existing nuclear waste disposal, and the risks associated with such developments, this raises serious concerns. Officials claimed Fukushima was unpredictable, yet with rising sea levels and climate change, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent.
Oldbury is located on an estuary with the second highest tidal ranges in the world, making it a questionable site for such a project.Beyond the environmental and safety risks, the financial burden is staggering—this project is expected to cost taxpayers many, many billions of pounds. It’s crucial that we stay informed and push for transparency on decisions that could have long-term consequences for us, our community and the world.
