Dr Chris Hogan, a consultant and meteorologist at Kisters, said: “Climate change is likely to lead to more extreme rainfall events, which in turn will lead to more flooding events.” Dr Hogan outlined key tips for flood safety and preparedness. 

First and foremost, having an emergency flood kit ready is crucial, as flooding can occur rapidly. Your kit should include bottled water and non-perishable snacks to keep you hydrated and energised. A torch with spare batteries is essential for visibility during power outages, while chargers and battery packs for mobile devices ensure you stay connected. 

Include a first aid kit with any necessary medications, and store important documents, such as home insurance paperwork and passports, in waterproof sleeves. Keep this kit in an easily accessible location and ensure it’s lightweight enough to carry if evacuation becomes necessary. 

Securing important documents and valuables is another key step. For documents that cannot be taken with you, use waterproof lock boxes and consider creating digital copies stored securely in the cloud. Moving valuable items to the highest point in your home can help minimise damage risk, as floodwater can be contaminated and may ruin affected belongings. 

If possible, elevate portable electronics like TVs and computers to prevent water damage, and unplug larger appliances to avoid electrical hazards. While you may not be able to move built-in appliances, this step can help safeguard your home from potential risks. 

It’s also wise to stock up on sandbags as a precautionary measure against flooding. If flooding becomes widespread, local authorities may distribute sandbags, but preparing early is always best. Sealing ground-level windows and doors with quality tape or silicone plumbing tape can reduce water entry. 

Above all, prioritise your family’s safety by knowing the safest route to higher ground or your local emergency shelter. Store emergency contacts and important phone numbers on your phone, ensuring you can access them quickly. Stay informed by following local authority guidance and check on vulnerable neighbours who may need assistance.
