THE World Wide Fund for nature is hosting a ‘Great Wild Walk’ in the Forest of Dean this weekend.

The event will create an opportunity for families and friends to explore the woodlands with like-minded people on Saturday, July 6.

The area is home to a wide range of wildlife. From buzzards and woodpeckers to fallow, roe and red deer, walkers will be hoping to see some fantastic animals.

The walk will start at 10am on Speech House Road, Coleford. The walk has been set up to raise money for the WWF with registration costing £5 with under 16-year-olds free of charge.

Funds raised from the walk will help protect and restore wildlife and habitats in the UK and around the world.

With a five or ten-mile route to choose from, the walks are very family friendly and suitable for all, even dogs are welcome.

Organisers are also hoping that the walk not only provides vital funding for conservation but brings some positivity into the lives of those taking part.

New research from King’s College London has found that spending time in environments with a diverse range of plants and animals can improve mental wellbeing.

Louise Oakley, director of events and community fundraising at WWF said: “Summer’s here, and we can't think of a better way to kick things off than getting our boots on and taking in the sights, smells and sounds of the beautiful Forest of Dean.

“This is a great chance to get outdoors with friends and family or simply take some time for your body and mind, while also doing your bit for nature.”
