THE FOREST of Dean officially stepped into the festive season on Tuesday, November 28, as Parkend held its much-loved Christmas Lights Switch-On.

As the first event of its kind in the area this year, it drew a crowd of around 300 people to the cricket ground for an evening filled with community spirit, festive cheer, and seasonal generosity.

Volunteers greeted attendees with a collection for the Forest of Dean food bank, encouraging donations to support local families during the holiday season. Children arriving with their families were given glowing lanterns, adding a magical touch to the growing excitement as dusk fell over the village.

The ceremony’s spotlight moment came as Alan and Michelle Powell from the Fountain Inn officially switched on the lights, illuminating the pavilion and setting the festive celebrations in motion. Mince pies and steaming hot drinks were enjoyed by many, offering a comforting treat to accompany the evening’s activities.

A lively sing-along brought the crowd together, with popular Christmas songs spreading festive cheer. Soon after, the Parkend Silver Band took centre stage with a stunning performance of traditional Christmas classics, their music filling the crisp night air.

Children were treated to endless fun with a fake snow machine, creating the illusion of a winter wonderland and bringing joyful laughter to the field.

The evening’s highlight came when Father Christmas made a spectacular entrance on Billy the Coleford Fire Station Float, thrilling the young ones and providing a memorable finale to the event.

As the Forest of Dean’s first Christmas lights switch-on of the year, Parkend’s celebration set a shining example of what the season is all about: togetherness, joy, and giving back.

With its warm atmosphere and festive traditions, the event marked a heartwarming start to Christmas in the Forest, leaving residents excited for the season ahead.
