AN eccentric Forest-born millionaire has announced his intention to run for US president in 2020...while also running from the law.
John David McAfee - who was born in 1945 to a British mother and American father stationed on a US army base in the Forest of Dean – made his fortune by developing the world’s first commercial anti-virus software program.
He recently launched his presidential campaign from a yacht called the ‘Freedom Boat’ while being sought on charges of tax evasion by the US authorities.
He says he will either seek the nomination of the Libertarian Party – as he did in the election campaign in 2015/16 – or will form his own party.
But he doesn’t want the job of president - just the stage to promote crypto-currency.
His campaign slogan is, ‘Don’t Vote for Me’ - his goal to ‘liberate’ Americans from an ‘insane’ and ‘controlling’ government.
Mr McAfee will be using surrogates at conferences, debates and presentations wearing masks of his face and equipped with small speakers attached to a smartphone so he can see who he is speaking to and respond to their questions.
Mr McAfee was raised in Virginia and started out as a programmer at NASA’s Institute for Space Studies in New York City. He went on to work for major companies like Univac, Xerox and Lockheed. In the 80s he began developing anti-virus software and founded McAfee Associates in 1987 and sold the company in 1994 for $100m. It was later sold on for $7bn.
