THE Forest of Dean foodbank was stretched to breaking point following delays in benefit payments caused by the introduction of Universal Credit.
Foodbank spokesman Sandi McDonagh saId that although donations of food are up six per cent on last year, demand continues to outstrip supply.
She said: “We have had an increase this year so far of nearly 10 per cent, but we had a spike in Jan/Feb of 45 per cent, which put our resources after Christmas under pressure.
“Universal Credit has certainly been a factor in this - our roll out was in November last year. Donations are up nearly six per cent, but we still need the public to continue to be so generous.
“On May 4 and 5 we are having a collection event in Tesco, Lydney.
“We collected an amazing 1.76 tonnes last December and Tesco also give us 20 per cent cash on our collection which is very useful for our running costs.
“We are still needing to expand our storage space. If anyone has a suitable dry lockup space, free or minimal rent, usually between October and March, please contact Chris Hedges on 0777 526 5263.”
