National League One
Redruth 19
Cinderford 12
IT was a frustrating afternoon for Cinderford in Cornwall, where the visitors created more than enough scoring opportunities to win the match.
However, they were always facing an uphill battle with a heavy penalty count against them.
Danny Trigg also missed a number of kicks at goal to bring the scores closer together.
The day started badly with fly-half Dave Knight pulling out with illness. That meant a late call-up for young Leicester Academy fly-half Billy Blair, who has done well in the second XV.
Redruth started the stronger and outside-half Aaron Penberthy kicked a penalty and dropped a goal inside 12 minutes.
Penberthy put over another penalty on 31 minutes, but Cinderford finished the first half camped on the Redruth line. They disappointingly knocked-on over the try line.
Penberthy, who has scored more than 200 points this season, made it 12-0 with his third penalty on 45 minutes.
Cinderford got back in the game when flanker Luke Allen crashed over for a try from close range, with Dan Trigg adding the conversion.
The home side put Cinderford under a lot of pressure and inspirational number eight Mark Bright crossed for a try in the corner, which Penberthy converted from the touchline.
Cinderford had the better of the closing stages and went close to scoring on a couple of occasions.
Eventually, a well executed move saw winger Nevaro Codlin race over in the corner for an unconverted try.
Cinderford pushed for another score, but ran out of time and had to settle for a losing bonus point.
Captain Chris Hall said: "Redruth played well, you can't knock them.
"We dominated in the scrums but kept getting penalised.
"I still think we'll stay up but Otley at home this week is now a much bigger game. We do well at home though, so I fancy us. We know how Otley play."
