A CAMPAIGN has been launched online to save the last remaining building at the Northern United Colliery site.

A Facebook campaign began earlier this week hoping to prevent the old bath house from demolition as part of the Northern Quarter regeneration project.

A spokesperson for the campaign hopes to unite enough people against the demolition in order to save the historic buildings.

Cinderford Town Councillor Mark Turner has backed the campaign.

“Personally, I think the building should be saved and improved,” Cllr Turner said.

“Looking at the map I don’t know how it falls into the plans for the new area, but it’s the last building from the old colliery and it would be good to keep it.

“I’m sure that we can get the best of both worlds; a bit of both the new and the old, and bring them together.

“Northern United has been in the news a lot lately, with it being 50 years since the colliery closed on Christmas Eve.

“Surely, something could be done? There’s talk of a new industrial estate with the Northern Quarter project, so maybe something along those lines.

“Something that’s been mentioned is maybe turning it into low cost industrial units for local people, which I think would be ideal.”
