THE owners of the Angel Hotel in Coleford are hoping to expand into adjoining stables to create an additional 10 en-suite bedrooms.

The planning application states that for over a decade investment by a number of owners into the Magnums nightclub situated in the former stableblock has been minimal and its use of as a nightclub ’has, for some time, been unviable’.

The landmark building, which dates back to the 17th Century, has a Grade II listing.

The owners readily admit that the nightclub has noise issues and felt that its new use as hotel accommodation would provide a significant reduction in noise as well as creating new jobs, boost tourism and safeguard the hotel’s future viability.

The plans include reinstating the windows at the side and back of the stableblock that were bricked up when it was converted into a nightclub during the early 1980s.

Other plans for the stables, which itself dates back to the early 19th century and once housed 40 horses, include the removal of all the modern paraphernalia and the internal bar.

The existing courtyard will be landscaped and used as a walled garden for three of the new hotel rooms.

The application states that that the Angel is a successful hotel and the provision of a further 10 en-suite bedrooms will provide more viability to the current business.
